Don't Just Shred It

A working part is worth far more whole than as a pile of dust. Most of the industry shreds anyway. Here's why we don't.

Mass shredding is fast for the recycler and wasteful for everyone else: it destroys working components, degrades material recovery, and burns enormous energy. Intelligent disassembly recovers parts intact first, then precision-recycles the rest, returning more value and less waste.

What the shredder eats

Feed a laptop into a shredder and you convert a working screen, a resellable board, recoverable RAM, and an intact battery into mixed fragments. Components that could have been refurbished, worth many multiples of their scrap value intact, become commodity shred. Sorting facilities then lose a meaningful share of potentially recyclable material to contamination and inefficiency. Shredding has its place at true end-of-life, but as a first step it is value destruction at industrial scale.

Is shredding ever the right answer?

Yes, for media that policy requires physically destroyed and for true end-of-life residue. The mistake is shredding first, before anything of value has been recovered.

Does disassembly compromise data security?

No. Data-bearing media is sanitized or destroyed to NIST 800-88 before any component or device is reused, with a certificate tied to the serial number.
